Assignment Instructions

Teachers can add instructions for students to assignments by following these steps:

  1. Click 'Assign' on an article or a text set card

    • If you clicked into an individual article, you will be redirected to the article page, where the Assignment Builder will appear on the right side of your screen. You can adjust the activities for your assignment and add instructions at the top of the Assignment Builder, then click 'Assign' to move on to the Assignment settings page to complete the Assignment creation

    • If you clicked into a text set, you will be redirected to the Text Set Assignment settings page, where you can enter instructions in the corresponding field

    • On the Assignment Settings page, you can select the Lexile level for articles, or allow each student to receive the article at their Newsela recommended level. If selecting to lock the level, students will not be able to change the levels until they submit a quiz with the locked level.

    • Next, you can select your assignees. You can assign to an entire classroom, or select individual(s) student(s) to assign the article to. You can learn about that here

    • Finally, you can select when to schedule the assignment as well as additional settings

  2. Click 'Create Assignment' to send the instructions and assigned article(s) to your students, or click 'Save Draft' to save the the assignment for a later time.

  3. At any time, you can toggle the View as Student option to see how your students will view the assignment when they receive it.
