Caregiver Accounts

Caregivers, and all adults without a school-affiliated email, can create an account that allows them to be connected to a student but will not be connected to the student's school. These users will be in the Newsela Lite experience.

Features accessible to parent accounts:

  • Add students to a single, auto-created classroom

  • Read articles

  • View quizzes

  • Print articles and quizzes

The first step is to create your own account. This account allows you to sign into Newsela to assign articles to your child.

  1. Go to Newsela

  2. Click Sign up in the upper right hand corner

  3. On the sign in page, select Sign Up at the bottom of the screen

  4. Choose Parent, Tutor, or Caregiver, in the bottom right.

  5. Follow the prompt to create an account using a Google or Microsoft connection, or by creating a username and password.

  6. Check your email! You will receive a verification email to confirm your new account. Follow the prompts, and log in!

Newsela automatically creates a single class for any student to join in your Settings page. Students should use the same accounts they've already created at school. If they don't have accounts already, you can help them create accounts by sharing your Class Link.

  • Go to the Class Directory by clicking your initials in the upper right-hand corner, clicking on Settings, and selecting the Class Directory tab.

  • Find the class you’d like to add students to and click Invite Students

  • There are two options:

    • Class Link: A link will appear (see below) where you can copy the URL and share it with your students. Once students click on the URL, Newsela will guide them to sign in or create an account, and then take them to the class.

    • Class Code: Students sign in on newsela.com. They will click their initials in the upper right-hand corner, and select settings. Under the classes section of their settings page, have students enter the Class Code and click "Add a Class."

  • You can also give your students these instructions: How to join your teacher’s class.

  • To confirm that your students have joined your class, go to your Students. Under each class name, you’ll see a list of students who have joined your class.

Quizzes on Newsela are reserved for students in schools and programs. With your caregiver account, you have access to view the quizzes, but not access to the quiz answers. We suggest you and your student review the quiz together in your account. The Reports tab, where teachers review student work, is also only available to educators.

You and your student can read articles together in Newsela. When you provide them with a direct link to an article, they can log in to Newsela and view it. If you have a printer, you can even print articles and quizzes for your students to take.
